11 2002 Map of the Month for WHPierce Exploration
Explanation: This map focuses on Iraq. The map attempts to depict the value of the hiatus at the Buwaib Unconformity at about 134 million years in my database. Erosion during this time probably provided the detritus for the major reservoirs of the Zubair Formation.
The striking aspect of this map is the close correspondence of the hiatus value map to the fault pattern. The darker tones of gray shows locations where the time value of the hiatus is at a minimum or conversely where more continuous sedimentation was occurring at the 134 Million Year time interval.
One interpretive consequence of this map is that stratigraphic units near this unconformity probably have abruptly terminated zero edges. I recently gave a talk at the Cairo AAPG describing the utility of unconformity mapping on the Arabian Plate. Click here for a pdf file of that talk.
